Red Hat Czech s.r.o.
Red Hat is a company producing Red Hat Enterprise Linux, an important commercial Linux distribution, JBoss Enterprise Middleware, Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization, Red Hat Enterprise MRG, and cloud computing software. In addition, the company provides consulting, training and certification services.
Red Hat was named after the red-white baseball hat worn by the Cornell University Lacrosse Team which the company owner Marc Ewing got from his grandfather and which he loved to wear until he lost it. Red Hat had previously provided the free distribution of Red Hat Linux which it abandoned in 2003 focusing only on the commercial option.
Currently, Red Hat sponsors the Fedora community project that develops the Fedora distribution. It has largely taken over both the user base of the original Red Hat Linux and its position as the testing platform for Red Hat Enterprise Linux updates. In 2011, the company had annual sales of over 1 billion USD. It is the first company in history to be able to earn such an amount only on open source software. In 2016, Red Hat reached another milestone when its sales exceeded 2 billion USD.
